Razor-thin margins across key battleground states continue to be closely watched by campaign advisors, political media and Twitterverse as Joe Biden slowly approaches 270. There are still ways to go before the election is completely finalized (namely, the Electoral College), but as the Biden transition team starts to coordinate their plans for a potential administration, it remains critical to ask: where should Joe Biden eat ice cream in D.C.?
Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats
200 Commerce St, Alexandria, VA 22314
What originally started out as an ice cream truck in DC recently turned into a storefront in neighboring suburb Alexandria. What makes Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats special is their Wisconsin-style frozen custard, an ultra rich and dense dessert. Perhaps his visit to Goodies’ won’t elicit quite the same response from Biden as his visit to Milwaukee-based Kopp’s Frozen Custard did, but if Biden wants to honor Wisconsin voters through ice cream and frozen desserts, Goodies’ is the right place to pay homage in the D.C. area.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream
1925 14th St NW B, Washington, DC 20009 (Multiple locations)
Months after Biden left the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream opened up their first D.C. location in the fall of 2017. Biden’s relationship with Jeni’s is well documented — Biden paid a public visit to Jeni’s Columbus HQ during the last few months of his vice presidency in 2016 to speak about fair wages. As documented by Eater earlier this year, the Biden campaign even partnered with Jeni’s to send ice cream gifts to campaign donors. In late September, Biden tweeted a photo of his “debate prep” consisting of Jeni’s ice cream and a pair of headphones. Safe to say, Jeni’s will definitely be a staple in the Biden White House. We can only speculate whether he will pay a visit to a Jeni’s storefront in D.C.
Southwest Soda Shop
1142 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024
Early in 2018, Biden visited The Wharf as part of the American Promise book tour, but unfortunately for him, family-owned Southwest Soda Shop had not yet opened their doors to the public. While Biden missed his opportunity in 2018, his return to the White House should entail a visit to this establishment to satisfy his sweet tooth after a family dinner at one of the many restaurants located along the Southwest Waterfront. Southwest Soda Shop serves a wide range of frozen treats, including ice cream, shakes, floats and soft serve.
Bon Matcha
1928 I St NW, Washington, DC 20001
Just a few blocks northwest of the White House, Bon Matcha specializes in soft serve and as the name might suggest, all things matcha. Bon Matcha features a matcha-flavored soft serve year-round and rotates a seasonal flavor (past flavors have included walnut, melon, sakura and misugaru). Bon Matcha is the place for Biden to stretch his legs on an afternoon summer stroll while keeping his ice cream break short and sweet.
Presidential Scoops
1450 G St. NW, Washington, DC 20005
Will Biden win Pennsylvania, his home state? Only time will tell, but in addition to serving ice cream flavors named after United States leaders, Presidential Scoops sources their ice cream from Bassetts Ice Cream in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, while Presidential Scoops will be temporarily closed until March 2021, it’s possible that Biden will have his own ice cream named after him by then. Presidential Scoops is also just a walk around the block — leaving Biden with options for a quick treat.
Thomas Sweet
3214 P St NW, Washington, DC 20007
There’s no shortage of Biden encounters at Thomas Sweet, or “T-Sweet’s” as affectionately named by Georgetown Hoyas and neighbors. During his first 5 years as Vice President, Biden sightings were frequent at Max’s Best Ice Cream in Glover Park, but with Max’s closure, Biden moved things further south on Wisconsin Avenue to Thomas Sweet. Even as recently as 2019, prior to intense campaign schedules, Biden could be spotted licking ice cream at Thomas Sweet. A visit to Thomas Sweet for old times’ sake will certainly evoke a forward-looking sense of bittersweetness and nostalgia as Biden settles into his new job at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Readers, are there any other places in the D.C. area that Joe Biden should eat ice cream? Let us know in the comments.
